TE Connectivity extends Power over Ethernet reach to 3,000m

Posted on

TE Connectivity, one of the world's leading connectivity companies, has announced that it has extended its Power over Ethernet (PoE), a new component of the company's powered fibre cable system, up to 3,000 metres.

The news comes as a substantial boost for the firm, with its PoE reach previously coming to just 100 metres, and arguably opens up the possibility of ushering in a whole range of new applications for PoE equipment, including CATV cameras, Wi-Fi access points, small cells and digital signage.

Cutting-edge protection technology

The technology behind the extender incorporates electrical power management, circuit protection electronics, as well as an optical to electrical media converter, which is sealed in an environmentally-sound enclosure.

An easy-to-deploy plug-in-and-play installation means the PoE extender is a simple, discreet way of deploying PoE devices in large buildings or in urban and suburban areas.

Due to it offering the full range of required electrical protection, the PoE extender is capable of providing great protection against spikes, electromagnetic interference and lightning surges.

It also meets NEC Class II and SELV standards and includes DC/DC conversion electronics, which enables it to automatically condition electrical voltage to the correct level needed for PoE input to the device under load.

Independent power

The distances achievable under the PoE extender mean that PoE deployments no long need to depend on the availability of a nearby power source, which in turn allows for significant network optimisations and reduces the number of required cells that must be deployed in order to cover a certain area - a particularly important issue when it comes to Wi-Fi access points.

Mark Hesling, global vice president of product management at TE Connectivity, said: "The PoE extender takes Ethernet-powered devices where they've never been before, making it possible for network architects to build massive deployments within a PoE infrastructure.

"Our Powered Fibre Cable System is all about connecting things simply and cost effectively, and the PoE extender enhances this value proposition."

Backdrop of success

The PoE extender is due for release in  June 2015 and will come on the back of the firm earning several industry awards.

The firm claimed two first-place Global ACE awards in New York from the Business Marketing Association (BMA) for its wearables integrated marketing campaign and the electronica 2014 trade show experience.

The annual awards aim to honour the creative campaigns of companies that promote innovations that are found to create real and lasting change, while also transforming the way people do business.

The most successful campaigns showcase TE's leading connectivity and sensor solutions, proving once again that it is a firm at the forefront of shaping the dynamics of commerce.
