Prysmian Group has unveiled an innovative cabling system it claims will help to bring power and ultra-broadband voice and data connection into homes.
The news, which is deemed a breakthrough in the company's attempts to create an integrated power-telecom network solution, and will place a particularly strong emphasis on power utilities.
Tests conducted during the research and development stage have suggested the product will deliver a connection speed of 1 Gb/second, along with a power supply, through the same cable.
Potential game-changer
The transport of energy is enabled by the inclusion of fibre optics, which also aid passive connectivity.
The system is also capable of including an active electronic switch to allow the transmission of information to the power cabinet and then to the substation.
Meanwhile, ultra-broadband connectivity is ensured by the way of a component.
There are numerous benefits of implementing an integrated power-telecommunications system, including the strong reduction in network costs and installation times, made possible due to the fact that trenching and civil works are largely unnecessary.
That allows for a connection speed of 1 Gb/sec or more, depending on the network configuration.
The technology has sparked a great level of excitement among experts, with Prysmian's Research and Development director stating: “This is a very important innovation we’re talking about, which represents an extremely effective and efficient solution to offer ultra-broadband connections to a number of users in certain areas, rapidly and at low cost.
“Since its creation, Prysmian has been one of the main players involved in the most important innovations in the cable industry, and we’re now proud to offer the result of our efforts in a field that affects the quality of life of all of us.”
Leading the way
The new product is likely to further strengthen Prysmian's reputation as the worldwide leader in the production of optical cable, manufacturing around 30 million km of optical fibre every year across five centres in Italy, France, The Netherlands, North America and Brazil.
The group is also the only company in Europe to have the technology for the production of optical fibre and is completing an investment plan of over €100 million with the aim of further improving its competitiveness in the market.
Philippe Vanhille, executive vice president telecom business at Prysmian Group said: “Prysmian’s Douvrin factory is the largest factory for the production of optical fibre in Europe, and with our help, we believe Europe can boost its leadership in this strategic and highly technological sector.
“We can offer Europe and the rest of the world our know-how and technologies for ultra-broadband cabling projects, like in Australia where we are helping bring faster and more reliable broadband to 90 per cent of fixed line customers”.
However, Europe is only one corner of the company's reach, with news emerging that it is to open a new factory in Mexico for the production of optical cables.
