An insight into cabling standards

An insight into cabling standards

Posted on

No matter what industry you look at, there are going to be standards to which every company has to abide.

The world of network cabling is no exception, with standards providing an established set of guidelines and best practices that extend to every aspect of telecommunications cabling systems.

Successfully implemented, standards help to reduce the likelihood of downtime while also helping to keep costs associated with installation, down.

Wide range

Yet while the intention is to make things easier, the sheer number of standards within the cabling industry can make the concept of compliance a little daunting, but thankfully there is a healthy dose of logic in how many of these standards relate to the industry.

The most common applications standards in IEEE Ethernet and ANSI T.11 can be found at the heart of cabling standards bodies of ISO/IEC (global)/(North America) and CENELEC (Europe).

The Telecommunication Industry Association (TIA) TR-42 issues standards for telecommunications cabling infrastructure, while the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is mainly driven by technical committees that place a primary focus on networking.

Finally, the IEEE Std 802.3 Standard for Ethernet offers standards for Ethernet-based networks in local and metropolitan areas.

Today, and for tomorrow too

It is no secret to everyone involved in the world of digital business that things can change very quickly, so it is essential that networks are prepared not just for the needs of the present, but also those later down the line.

Understanding industry standards plays a crucial role in getting to grips with the needs of your system, with a number of companies offering their own thoughts on developments as and when they occur.

Commscope is one such brand, with its standards group publishing a quarterly update on standards activities.

The company is well-versed on the topic, with over 30 members of its team boasting experience of working in a total of 60 cabling, infrastructure, components and applications standards projects around the world.

The edition for the third quarter of 2015 suggested that even with all of the choices available, there is a clear path towards creating systems with higher bandwidth.

It all means that by getting a solid grip on standards and linking up with the right sources of information, companies can better equip their networks for future use.
