Intertek certifies CommScope WBMMF testing

Posted on

CommScope has announced that it has had its testing processes for wideband multimode fibre (WBMMF) certified by leading quality assurance (QA) provider Intertek, demonstrating that the facility in Richardson, Texas, meets standards set out by the Telecommunications Industry Association.

Inspectors from Intertek witnessed the cable manufacturer's differential mode delay (DMD) testing processes on wavelengths of 850, 880, 910 and 953 nanometres. CommScope stated this is believed to be the first time the industry has successfully confirmed a test of wavelengths of more than 850 nm. This is said to be an important step in verifying fibre performance for emerging shortwave wavelength division multiplexing systems.

David Brown, senior vice-president for research and development at CommScope, commented: "This testing and certification validates CommScope's commitment to its state-of-the-art DMD testing capability that is critical for new product development."

He added: "With Intertek as our witness, our certified testing will increase customer confidence in our laboratory measurements." The QA provider confirmed that CommScope's measurement setup and tested techniques met the TIA-455-220-A standard.

The certification will allow CommScope to continue development work on its innovative WBMMF solutions, Mr Brown continued.

When coupled with transceivers using wavelength division multiplexing or pulse-amplitude modulation technology, this technology will provide a path for CommScope customers to increase the throughput capacity of their fibre cabling from 10G to 100G and beyond. This will be of particular importance as businesses seek to keep up with the huge increases in bandwidth today's tools require.

"Our customers and the industry expect leadership from CommScope and we are doing that by providing innovative, certified solutions that adhere to important industry standards," Mr Brown said.

Intertek also confirmed that CommScope's WBMMF fibres met the TIA-492AAAC, TIA-492AAAD and TIA-492AAAE industry standards.

Antoine Pelletier, project engineer at Intertek, stated he is pleased that the firm has been able to provide its expertise to CommScope's DMD bench.

"CommScope’s DMD bench met the measurement standard’s requirements and properly graded the performance of fibres used in CommScope's LazrSPEED® cables with respect to the TIA-492 series requirements," he continued.

The WBMMF technology is described by CommScope as an "innovation solution" that allows IT and data centre managers to build a cost-effective infrastructure that is able to support today's bandwidth needs, as well as ensure organisations are well set for the future.
