Countryside Alliance urges govt to clarify rural full fibre strategy

The government has been urged to be clearer about how it intends to fund the rollout of full fibre connectivity in rural parts of the UK in order to ensure these locations do not miss out.

The Countryside Alliance said that while a pledge to connect every home and business across the country with full fibre technology by 2033 is welcome, it is concerned there is not yet any guaranteed funding for the project after 2021.

It therefore called on the government to set out a clear funding strategy that will ensure rural parts of the UK get the investment they need to support strong digital connectivity in the coming years.

Head of policy at the organisation Sarah Lee said: "At a time when Britain is leaving the EU, we must ensure Britain is globally competitive in the post-Brexit world, and this will not be the case unless we invest in better digital connectivity that is fit for purpose, responsive to user needs and future proofed in line with the best available technology."

However, in addition to guaranteed funding, the Countryside Alliance stated the government needs to do more to overhaul the planning system in order to support faster delivery of mobile and fixed-line connectivity services.

At present, the group said "red tape, bureaucracy and poor guidance" are all holding back the infrastructure needed to deliver superfast broadband.

The Countryside Alliance observed poor broadband speeds are hindering economic growth in rural areas, while a lack of connectivity also increases isolation and social exclusion.

It also noted that improving this situation is a key priority for many residents in the countryside, with a recent survey finding digital connectivity is one of the top four priorities for rural voters, along with a new agricultural policy, tackling crime and solving the housing crisis.

Chief executive of the group Tim Bonner said: "The next prime minister must implement a sea change of thinking in government by 'rural proofing' all policies to ensure they are appropriate for people who live and work in the countryside."
