Netgear updates line-up of networking products at CES 2016

There have been plenty of discussions from various sectors regarding the new products and developments unveiled at the CES 2016 event in Las Vegas earlier this month.

Indeed, it is an event that sees all of the biggest tech companies across the globe show off their newest and most exciting products.

Networking giant Netgear was no exception, with the company showcasing the latest upgrade to its Nighthawk X4 line.

The original X4 - the R7500 - was launched with Quantenna radios and a Qualcomm IPQ security operations centre (SoC), amid promises of MU-MIMO support as part of a future firmware update.

That commitment was dashed when Netgear decided to only enable MU-MIMO with a hardware upgrade. Meanwhile, the second version of the R7500 with full MU-MIMO support became an all-Qualcomm Atheros affair and now looks primed to be replaced by the Nighthawk X4S within the same price bracket.

New features

Among the new features of the updated Nighthawk X4S (R7800) is an IPQ8065 dual-core SoC at 1.7GHz and the QCA9984 radio.

The 4x4 design supports 160 MHz (either contiguous or 80MHz + 80 MHz) and MU-MIMO out of the box, setting it apart from the AC2400-class routers introduced last year.

The CES 16 event also saw the firm launch a wall-plug Wi-Fi extender with MU-MIMO capability, the EX7300, which belongs to the AC2200 class,

A wall-plug Wi-Fi extender with MU-MIMO capability (EX7300) was also launched at CES. It belongs to the AC2200 class, with a 4x4 1733Mbps model in the 5 GHz band and 3x3 450 Mbps in the 2.4 GHz band.

The antennae on the new models are internal and work alongside a GbE RJ-45 port.

Always staying connected

For the same price, Netgear has also confirmed the launch of the the EX6400, an AC1900-class extender with 3x3 spatial streams in both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.

The latest model, which can be used as a Wi-Fi access point, offers 256-QAM support for the 2.4 GHz band.

In terms of power-line communications, Netgear has also introduced the PLW1000, which helps to combine powerline technology with Wi-Fi.

On the PLC side, Netgear has introduced the PLW1000, which combines powerline technology with Wi-Fi.

Using the HomePlug AV2 standard as a foundation, the new adaptor offers support for up to 1 Gbps of theoretical throughput.

It also creates a Wi-Fi hotspot at the place of installation and is set to be marketed as a 802.11ac access point.

Finally, in terms of ReadyNAS products, Netgear was eager to display the RN20x and 21x series at CES.

Reports have suggested that customers purchasing RN202, RN204, RN212, RN214, RN312, RN314, RN316 and RN516, can obtain three free months of Premium PLEX Plus.
