Netgear unveils 'world's fastest router'

Posted on

Networking supplier Netgear has introduced a new device that it claims is the most powerful router on the market.

The Nighthawk X10 AD7200 Smart Wi-Fi Router promises to deliver high performance for applications that require large amounts of data to be transferred, such as media streaming and instant file backups.

Featuring a 1.7GHz Quad Core processor that is said to be the most powerful ever fitted to a home router, the Nighthawk X10 also boasts Quad-Stream Wave 2 Wi-Fi architecture and next generation high speed 802.11ad Wi-Fi, which allows users to enjoy combined wireless speeds of up to 7.2Gbps.

Michael Thelander, president of Signals Research Group, explained: "802.11ad also provides approximately one-tenth the latency as compared to 802.11ac, which is absolutely critical for applications like virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality."

The Nighthawk X10 is also the first router designed for the home market to come with a 10Gb port to support a fibre connection, which should enable users to take advantage of lightning-fast streaming and backups to connected Network Attached Storage devices.

Meanwhile, two USB 3.0 ports make it easy to add storage for backup and file transfer over Wi-Fi.

Other features of the Nighthawk X10 include the latest MU-MIMO technology that allows for simultaneous streaming of data to multiple devices without lag, as well as support for Plex Media Server. The device is said to be the world's first router that is able to run this application without the need to be connected to a computer.

This means the device should be able to support high-bandwidth applications such as 4K video streaming and VR gaming without any drop in performance.

David Henry, senior vice-president for home networking at Netgear, said the Nighthawk X10 sets a new bar for performance and a new record for speed when transferring large files such as videos within networks and to the cloud.

"Today's video files are getting larger with 4K and VR video," he added. "Offloading from capture devices and moving these large files within a network often becomes a time-consuming and challenging task. The Nighthawk X10 is powerful enough to move these files at unprecedented speed and provides easy access once the file is stored on the network."
