How Power over Ethernet can benefit your network infrastructure

Posted on

Powering your network is one of the most important aspects of creating a successful digital setup for your business, but there are times when the whole process feels more challenging than it should be.

Connecting the various components to a conventional power supply can prove a tricky business, meaning that some operators need to be a little bit more imaginative when it comes to finding the best way to ensure everything runs smoothly.

An increasing number of enterprise networks are turning to Power over Ethernet (PoE) as a solution, allowing them to subsequently enjoy a whole host of benefits.

The flexibility of PoE allows companies to implement a host of different pieces of hardware that may not have otherwise been possible to include.

PoE an easier, cheaper and more flexible solution

One of the key benefits to arise from using PoE is the positive effect it has on time and costs, with the technology allowing the electrical current necessary for operating devices to be carried by data cables instead of power cords.

As a result, the number of wires required for running a system is reduced, making the whole process of installing hardware much easier and, subsequently, cheaper.

The reduced costs associated with materials and installation means that PoE enhances the scalability of a network, allowing companies to upgrade their systems without worrying about whether they can offer the necessary support.

Opening up possibilities

The multi-functionality of PoE means it can offer impressive protection to your business, with VoIP phones, wireless internet and even IP cameras all exciting possibilities for firms in various sectors.

Wired IP cameras use significant amounts of bandwidth, meaning they can greatly benefit from using PoE as it enables users to provide power and control to gate entry systems. The end result is an ideal solution for automated security.

From Bluetooth to Wi-Fi, there is little doubt that wireless is the order of the day for many enterprise networks, allowing them to operate more flexibly than ever before. PoE can be integral here too, expanding options for optimal placement of the last wired link.

It is perhaps worth bearing in mind that PoE does not always have to provide the main source of power, it can also give a valuable safety net for many enterprises. Devices such as I/O modules and PLCs already have Ethernet links, but  their power needs can make PoE prohibitive.

But the technology can nevertheless be useful in controlling communication modules to help with backup, continuity and orderly shutdown if a primary power source fails.
