Common network pitfalls and how to avoid them

Posted on

Setting up an effective network is a huge part of ensuring success for your company. However, much like any other area of technology, there are always times when things go wrong or do not quite work out in the way they should.

Maintenance is a key part of ensuring that any problems do not escalate and cause further issues for a network's functionality, and there is always something to be said for nipping problems in the bud before they progress.

Identifying hardware issues ahead of time

Hardware is undoubtedly the most important component of your network. Whether its cabling, routers or server, any hardware problems could have a hugely negative impact on how your network operates.

It is therefore always good to regularly review your system to establish its normal temperature during operation, how close your network is to running to full capacity, whether memory is running low or if your connections are operating as normal.

While all of this may seem arduous, the potential benefit of knowing exactly what makes your network tick will make it easier to identify issues and enhance the functionality of your network.

Watch out for malicious third parties

While antivirus software is clearly an important part of securing your network, it would be wrong to rely completely on them to safeguard your hardware by themselves as hackers will always look for a way to get round them.

Monitor your system for unusual traffic or malicious login attempts, which are often associated with malware.

By recognising suspicious behaviour, it can make it easier to ensure that your system is prepared against any potential attack, limiting the consequences and, in some cases, leave it completely unscathed.

Make sure you have the right hardware

It is perhaps an obvious point, but the truth is that many businesses leap into implementing a new technology as part of their system, without carefully considering how their network will be able to accommodate it.

For instance, VoIP and video conferencing has become a popular trend for many firms looking for greater levels of flexibility in their communications solutions.

However, without the right hardware, it becomes difficult to really achieve the right level of quality in sound and video streaming.

Issues and interruptions can have hugely negative implications for a company, particularly if they value long-distance communication as part of their operations.

In order to ensure these communications outlets can run as smoothly as possible, it is important to ensure your network is equipped to handle the resulting rise in UDP traffic.
