Prysmian Group has been named as the top cable manufacturer in the world by revenue in a new independent ranking of the globe's top 100 firms.
According to Integer Research's Top 100 Wire and Cable Producers Database, Prysmian had managed to find great success through the earnings from its insulated wiring and cabling, which managed to reach $9.6 billion (£5.86 billion) over the course of 2013.
It represents continued success for Prysmian, which has kept its place at number one since its acquisition of Draka in 2011.
Fellow firm Nexans was not far behind, with the competition between the two heavyweights of the industry beginning to heat up.
Perhaps one of the most notable trends to emerge from the rundown, which was based on the wire and cable revenues of companies around the world, was the rise of firms from China.
A number of Chinese companies managed to take places usually occupied by organisations from Europe, the Middle East and Taiwan.
Integer's Director of Wire & Cable, Philip Radbourne, said: "The Chinese cable market has shown rapid growth over the last decade, but consolidation and investment in modern large scale operations has seen more than 36 Chinese cable companies enter the Top 100."
Howevever, companies such as Nexans appear to still be in high demand.
As well as achieving an impressive ranking in Integer's top 100 companies, Nexans has also announced that it is ready to build on its success by hosting its first ever fire safety conference in Brussels on October 23rd.
“A clear view on fire safety cables: Addressing the challenges of materials, legislation and liability”, is expected to attract a number of experts from across the industry, as well as specifiers and academics.
Attendees will mainly discuss developments from across the industry as well as a number of other relevant topics.
One issue set to be covered is that of the challenges arising from materials, legislation and liability. Experts from Nexans will be on hand to present ideas about fire safety within the cabling industry, including new rules set to be introduced by the European Union, which could have wider implications for Belgium and the rest of Europe.
Christof Dinkelmeyer, R&D group leader for fire safety & services at Nexans Research Centre in Nuremberg, who will also be speaking at the conference, said: “At present the fire safety cable industry is in a state of change after the introduction of new regulation by the European Commission and Belgian government respectively. The conference will represent an excellent forum for people in the industry to come together to discuss these developments.”
Other speakers lined up for the event include Professor Patrick van Hees from Lund University, Ludo Cornelis, a professor at the Free University of Brussels and Of Counsel at Eubelius, as well as Jacques Vertessen, an expert consultant on the Construction Products Regulation and Catherine Grimonpont from the FPS Economy.
