The global Ethernet switch market continues to go from strength to strength, as new data reveals there has been a significant surge in sales between April, May and June of this year.
According to the International Data Corporation's (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Ethernet Switch and Route tracker, revenues in this market reached an impressive $5.7 billion (approximately £3.5 billion) during the second quarter of 2014.
This represents a year over year increase of 6.2 per cent, and a quarter over quarter increase of 8.1 per cent.
In contrast, worldwide revenues for the router marker declined by four per cent, despite the fact that it had grown sequentially over the "seasonally weak" first quarter, the IDC tracker noted.
Asia/Pacific proved to be the most productive, with the Ethernet switch market experiencing its highest ever growth. Year over year growth for the region was exceptionally robust during Q2, rising by 21 per cent.
The key two economies responsible for this were China and India, which both demonstrated a strong and growing demand for the technology. China was up by 40.2 per cent and India was up by 29.3 per cent.
IDC said that this "more than offset" the dip in performance in countries like Thailand and Indonesia, which experienced declined over the second quarter.
Other markets that showed positive growth included Latin America, which, year over year, recorded 18.7 per cent. Argentina, Brazil and Peru were the highest performing nations here.
Western Europe also performed way better than expected, with its best performance since the third quarter of 2010. For the second quarter of 2014 it posted 13.9 per cent increases.
IDC said that this is a notable development, indicative of potential for a "solid rebound" after what has been a trying time – "years of difficult macroeconomic conditions" have naturally put a lot of pressure on investments.
10Gb Ethernet switch revenue went up by 7.8 per cent to reach $2.2 billion and while 10Gb Ethernet switch port shipments expanded by an impressive 23 per cent (six million ports were shipped during the second quarter).
40Gb Ethernet switch is also in good health as a "standalone" segment, IDC noted, and is worth around $323 million per quarter in revenue.
"The worldwide Ethernet switch market saw strong growth as a result of continued gains in 10GbE and 40GbE port shipments, especially in the data centre, and with some regions and countries really outperforming over recent historical trends," explained Rohit Mehra, vice president of Network Infrastructure at IDC.
"The GbE market also did well in terms of shipments in 2Q14, showing its ongoing importance across the enterprise at the network edge, as well as in providing the underlying network platform on which enterprise WLANs are being deployed."
