Comtec - Giving something back to the Community

Comtec are pleased to support HRH The Duke of York’s Community Initiative Business End Grant Scheme.

To date, grants totalling £18,112 have been awarded from the pooled fund we helped establish. From funding fuel poverty emergency packs to paying for the installation of a bespoke ball pool hoist, the fund is enabling nine DOYCI award holders from across the whole of Yorkshire to either develop or sustain a raft of valuable community projects.

Successful applicants included;

The Aspergers Youth Club, Doncaster were awarded a grant to enable members together with a parent or carer to spend a VIP day out at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

Sheffield based Concord Youth Music were awarded a Business End grant in order to part-fund an ambitious plan to move its annual showpiece production from a make-shift venue into “a real theatre”.

The Next Step Trust in Halifax applied for a grant to fund the cost of fitting a specialist hoist into the groups new sensory room thus enabling individuals who are unable to walk, access to a ball pool.

Wilberfoss in Bloom is a group open to all, with many residents joining in and helping to maintain planters and flower beds as well as ensuring a litter-free environment. They are an active partner in numerous community projects, which range from supporting an annual duck race to working alongside a Hull-based voluntary group which provides employment skills to people with mental handicaps. The award enabled them to buy materials needed to erect two new planters at the entrances to the village.

Rothwell FDM – For Disability Mobility’s application was a perfect demonstration of how, for some people, the things that most of us take for granted are infrequent luxuries. In this case a trip to the cinema followed by a meal. However their modest application wasn’t to cover the price of the cinema ticket and the food – it was to help with the cost of running the organisation’s coach on their twice monthly outings.

Since April 2013 Ryedale Carers Support has worked in partnership with Live Music Now (LMN) to provide a monthly social event for up to eighty isolated and vulnerable older people from across Ryedale. However in Spring 2015 ongoing funding became an issue and an approach was made to The Business End. The grant award was for “Songs and Scones” as the project is known.

For Peregrine Way Tenants and Residents Association, changes in local public transport services coupled with a growing membership meant this Sheffield based group were using the majority of their transport budget to assist in getting people to and from essential hospital/doctors appointments rather than for pleasure trips. A Business End grant is now helping this organisation to continue its work and provide a lifeline to some of Sheffield’s most vulnerable and elderly people.

Orb Community Enterprise, Knaresborough having already established a reputation for supporting people with severe mental illness through creativity, is now reaching out to those in the general public who are struggling with the stress of the early stages of depression, anxiety or related problems.  The award supports their latest project – The Duke of York’s Gardening Initiative. This will be run by a gardening leader cum mental health facilitator who will lead service users and volunteers in making a garden which will become a centre of mental wellbeing and an asset to the community.

Edlington Community Organisation were awarded funding to help support a Winter Wellbeing Project for the elderly and vulnerable within Edlington, Warmsworth, Braithwell and other areas within Doncaster. The funding will be used to purchase personal and household safety items and to make up winter fuel poverty emergency packs.
